Eric Cutler is today considered one of the most established young heroic tenors, enjoying sensational success at the world’s most prestigious opera houses and festivals, such as the Metropolitan Opera, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, the Vienna State Opera, the Zurich Opera House, the Opéra national de Paris, the Salzburg Festival, the Teatro la Fenice, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Théâtre Royal de La Monnaie, the Bayreuth Festival, the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, the Canadian Opera Company, the Houston Grand Opera, Opera Australia, the Grand Théâtre de Genève, the Glyndebourne Festival and the Santa Fe Opera, among others.
Highlights of the current season include Erik/Der fliegende Holländer at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, the title role in Les contes d’Hoffmann as well as the Emperor in a new production of Die Frau ohne Schatten at the Semperoper Dresden, Siegmund/Die Walküre at the Zurich Opera House, and Florestan in a new production of Fidelio in Amsterdam.
In the 2022/23 season, Cutler made his debut as Siegmund in Andreas Homoki’s new production of Die Walküre at Zurich Opera House, conducted by Gianandrea Noseda. Following this internationally acclaimed success, Cutler made his house debut at the Vienna State Opera as Bacchus in Ariadne auf Naxos and returned to the Bavarian State Opera as Max in Dmitri Tcherniakov’s new production of Der Freischütz. He also appeared as Erik at the Metropolitan Opera before closing his season with the concert series Midsummer Night’s Gala of the Grafenegg Festival 2023 alongside Asmik Grigorian, which was broadcast on 3Sat.
Other recent highlights include Eric Cutler’s role debut in the title role of Peter Grimes at the Theater an der Wien, his performances in the title role of Lohengrin at the Hamburg State Opera and at the Salzburg Easter Festival under the baton of Maestro Christian Thieleman, and Erik in Der fliegende Holländer at the Bayreuth Festival.
Eric Cutler is also a sought-after concert and lieder singer. He sang his first performances of Das Lied von der Erde with the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich under François-Xavier Roth and performed the same work at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples under Juraj Valcuha and with the Pittsburgh Symphony under Manfred Honeck. With Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, for example, he performed with the Houston Symphony and at the Berlin State Opera under Daniel Barenboim. At the Laeiszhalle in Hamburg, he sang the title role in Berlioz’s La Damnation de Faust with Sylvain Cambreling conducting the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra, and at London’s Barbican Centre he sang Bruckner’s Te Deum with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Bernard Haitink.
Eric Cutler is a native of Adel, Iowa, and an alumnus of Luther College and the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artists Development Program. The winner of the 2005 Richard Tucker Award, preceded earlier by Study and Career Grants from the Tucker Foundation, Cutler began his career in the Bel Canto and lyric tenor repertoire before progressing to lyric dramatic repertoire under the tutelage of Michael Paul, who remains his vocal mentor today.
